Personality: In ‘Tiger Millionaire’, Amethyst tells Steven that “You can’t let anybody make you feel like garbage.” When he asks if that’s how she feels, she insists, “I only feel how I wanna feel” – which pretty much sums up her approach to life. Amethyst has a lot of deep-seated insecurity about her origins as a ‘parasite’ and the fact that the only home she’s ever had is a planet that was damaged in order to create her, but she conceals it behind an extremely blunt, casual, vulgar exterior. She conceals it so well, in fact, that Pearl, who has known her for five thousand years, was convinced that she was defiantly proud of where she came from, rather than ashamed and convinced that her teammates thought less of her for it. She wants the other Crystal Gems' approval and respect, but is afraid of getting it wrong; she prefers to just be gross and inappropriate, because it's easier to anticipate and cope with being looked down on for that stuff than trying to get stuff right and screwing up.

The fact that these traits often obscure the stuff she’d prefer not to acknowledge doesn’t mean that she’s faking it, though. Amethyst isn’t pretending to be something she’s not. If anything, her coping mechanism is basically to be herself as hard as possible and to hell with anyone who has a problem with it – it's just that there are some parts of herself she doesn't like to express. Mostly it's The Feelings. You know how it is. But on the whole, Amethyst does what she wants, often without regard for the consequences, and what she wants is usually ill advised, kind of disgusting, or both. She says in ’Steven the Swordfighter’ that she’s the Crystal Gem most frequently prone to having her physical form damaged so badly that she has to retreat into her gem, and with how eager she is to, for example, be thrown at things in battle, it’s not hard to believe. She acts pretty spectacularly unconcerned over her own wellbeing – when her gem is damaged and her physical body is glitching as a result she doesn’t seem very bothered by it at all (‘now I have this cool googly eye’), and the accident that damaged her gem in the first place was the result of her messing around on the edge of a cliff.

She loves to eat, sleep and fight, despite the fact that eating and sleeping aren’t biologically necessary for gems – where Pearl finds the idea of eating repulsive, Amethyst thinks how weird and gross it is makes it cool and fun. (Of course, the fact that eating is something she does just for shits and giggles means that what she eats is often kind of… unusual… like months-old burritos or just the cheese packets from boxed macaroni.) In general Amethyst likes things that are weird or ‘janky’, like the ‘great junk’ she discourages Greg from throwing out or the heaps of hoarded rubbish that she keeps in her room – she’s drawn to stuff that other people might not appreciate so much, although it’s probably less to do with seeing the beauty in all things the way Rose Quartz did and more because valuing things that other people think are ugly garbage makes her feel better about herself. (There's probably a bit of that self-loathing tied up in how enthusiastic about shapeshifting she is – but more than that Amethyst is broadly speaking a very physical person, and taking full advantage of her malleable form is just one more expression of that.)

Although Amethyst is generally extremely laid-back, when she’s upset she gets angry, lashing out at others either physically, like her fight with Pearl in ‘On The Run’, or emotionally, like when she shapeshifts into Rose to get at Greg, who she blames for the fact that her surrogate mother figure is gone. She also often chafes against the older gems’ less loose approach to things, especially Pearl – while Amethyst sometimes turns to Garnet for validation, her relationship with Pearl is strained since Rose Quartz ‘died’, both of them having taken her loss very hard. Gems don't age, and they don't have any equivalent of a 'childhood' stage biologically or socially, but nonetheless Amethyst is very much aware of the difference in experience between her and the older Crystal Gems. She is the only one of them to have never known the gem Homeworld, and the only one not to have been a part of the war for Earth even though she was most likely created to fight in it, and the gap between her and them that this creates is one Amethyst struggles to bridge. She feels like she has a lot to live up to, and that she can never truly be on the same level as Garnet and Pearl. (This is probably a big part of why she enjoys spending time with Peridot so much.)

All the same, the Crystal Gems are Amethyst’s family, and she cares for them a lot, if in a rude teenager kind of way. She’s the least responsible of the gems by miles, but she’s still very protective of Steven, even if she doesn’t always act in his best interests (indulging his desire to run away from home, for example, or encouraging him to make dangerous jumps onto floating rocks). When she realises something she’s done has hurt him, though, like when she realises he’s seen her lashing out at his dad, she’s genuinely contrite – like the other gems, she loves Steven and taking care of him is perhaps her top priority.

Abilities: jesus, uh,

SHAPESHIFTING: Like the majority of gems, Amethyst can alter her physical form at will. Whatever she changes into will always be purple, and the gem located in her chest is always present and unaltered. Amethyst is perhaps better than average at shapeshifting, but she still can't do it if she's stressed or overwhelmed, and holding a shape other than her current 'default' for too long puts a strain on her body.

REGENERATION: Gems can only be truly killed by the destruction of their gem. If their physical form (solid and tangible and capable of being harmed, but still fundamentally a sort of magical projection) is damaged too much, they can retreat into their gem to recuperate their energies until they're strong enough to regenerate. (How long they take to do this varies – for very meticulous gems like Pearl this can be weeks, but Amethyst tends not to take more than a few hours at most.) Every time they regenerate, they can alter their appearance, although it doesn't seem like anything more than minor or superficial changes (hair, clothes, etc.) are sustainable; this new appearance becomes the baseline to which they will always return after shapeshifting, until the next time they are forced to retreat to their gem.

SUMMONED WEAPON: Amethyst can pull a magical whip from her gem. It's studded with little spikes and has three tips, and it can be used as a flail, a lasso, or a bolas. If it leaves her grip she can summon a new one to replace it – indeed, she can summon more than one at a time if she wants to.

FUSION: Gems can combine their physical forms into larger, more powerful fusion gems. They have to be in sync to do this – dancing is one way of streamlining this process, but fusion can take place without it. A successful fusion is their own individual with a personality distinct from their component parts.

SUPERHUMAN STRENGTH AND RESILIENCE: Most gems seem to be unusually strong, with very few exceptions, but as a gem grown for battle Amethyst is stronger than average (although not as strong as other Quartzes). She can jump higher than humans and withstand being thrown at solid objects at great speed.

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG SPIN DASH NONSENSE: it's a sonic the hedgehog spin dash except it's purple

LACK OF PHYSICAL NEED FOR SUSTENANCE OR SLEEP: Gems can become exhausted if they've been exerting themselves prolongedly, and it's been suggested that sleeping could help in those circumstances, but it isn't something they do on a daily basis and many gems never sleep at all. They also don't need to eat food, nor does there appear to be any gem equivalent that they get their energy from. Amethyst sleeps and eats all the time anyway.

CARNIVAL
Soul Colour: I mean, purple, obviously
Ideal Job: BOUNCER and WRESTLER
Relevant Experience: Amethyst.......is good at punching
also she was already doing both of those jobs for a while before she

Carnival History: Amethyst got contracted into the carnival for cheating at a game because she wanted the prize. For most of her time here she has never been radically fussed about this, because a year and a day isn't all that long when you're five thousand years old, and if she's just going to be dropped back at the same time and place she left then wasn't it pretty much just a big, weird vacation? Like, apart from occasionally having to fight vampires and so on, but it's not like that's too far out of the ordinary for her. So her contract getting extended for a few months thanks to one or two accidents here and there didn't really bother her. She misses her home a lot, for sure, but as long as she knows the people she's missing aren't having to get along without her it's not too bad: she's comfortable enough, the weird physical changes are kind of awesome, and she's going home sooner or later. In the meantime, it's pretty cool to get to fight people as the Purple Puma in front of a bigger audience than she got to back at Beach City, and she likes some of the people here... And, well, it's not like she doesn't want to go home, but... there's something kind of freeing about being somewhere where her background doesn't matter and she doesn't have anything to live up to. You know. Just for a little while.

That said, though, she has recently ended up extending her contract for another full year and a day in exchange for being granted increased physical power -- after the conflict with the vampires on VAMPIRE WORLD some of her insecurities about her strength came back with a vengeance and she felt another year at the carnival was a small price to pay to permanently ensure she'd be better able to protect her friends.

This anxiety has only increased since Steven arrived at the Carnival, which she feels kind of irrationally personally responsible for because she was the first one here, like everyone else from Beach City who's wound up in a contract here is here because of her. Which was kind of okay when it was just Peridot, but Steven, and Greg? Not so much! Suffice to say that she plans on keeping her contract renewed until Steven is able to go home.

That said, after the Carnival's stop in Portland, she made the decision to take a break from the Carnival and head home for a while. Certain particular aspects of that whole escapade made her feel a need to reconnect with Earth and remind herself of where she's from. (Some of the things Blue Diamond said to her didn't help.)

She's not going to be thrilled about all of the stuff she's missed, but, well, who's fault is that, eh?

event by event summary of her time at the carnival prior to game start is here.

Existing Contract: Amethyst is about three months most of the way through a renewed year-and-a-day contract in exchange for greater physical strength. Her original contract was for cheating at a game, and she had a few extra months added on during her time since then for accidentally breaking stuff.

Details: She just wanted to be able to punch harder and take more punches -- nothin fancy!
